Star Wars: Dawn of Darkness
The Clone Wars was a galaxy-wide conflict fought between 22 BBY and 19 BBY between the opposing armies of the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The matter at the heart of the conflict was the desire of hundreds of thousands of star systems to seperaate from the Galactic Republic and form their own pan-galactic government, which would be the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
The Galactic Republic was lead by Chancellor Palpatine and was defended by the Grand Army of the Republic, a massive Clone Army the likes of which the Galaxy had never seen before which was lead by the Jedi Knights until the wars conclusion.
The Confederacy of Independent Systems was lead by the charismatic Count Dooku, a former Jedi Knight turned politician and secretly a Sith Lord and defended by legions of sophisticated Battle Droids produced by members and allies of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
Though the Confederacy of Independent Systems at many points held an upper hand, the Galactic Republic was the ultimate victor after three years of terrible bloody combat that saw the deaths of billions of sentients. Though victorious however, the Galactic Republic by wars end bore little resemblance to it’s former self only three years earlier. A series of reforms at all levels of galactic government gave ever more power to the office of the Chancellor, and a failed rebellion by the traitorous Jedi Knights at the wars end lead to the re-alignment of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire, with former Chancellor Palpatine appointed it’s first Emperor.
The aftermath of the war will likely be felt for years to come as thousands of former seperatist worlds remain under heavy Imperial military occupation.
